The Plaza in Clayton

At 31 stories, The Plaza in Clayton is the tallest residential building in Clayton, Missouri—a modern landmark offering refined urban living with an emphasis on both luxury and greenery. While much of the city’s architecture is defined by glass and steel, The Plaza integrates substantial outdoor spaces, with expansive terraces on the 4th and 5th floorsproviding private garden retreats for residents.

We were commissioned to enhance these spaces with seasonal plantings, ensuring that the gardens maintained a sense of seasonality and renewal throughout the year. While much of the rooftop greenery remained constant, the Carondelet Circle façade became a focal point for dramatic, annually updated displays. Here, bold foliage, vibrant color palettes, and statement plantings were designed to reflect the prestige of Clayton’s premier residential address, reinforcing the building’s distinctive presence within the city.

The result was a planting design that brought movement, contrast, and seasonality to these outdoor spaces, complementing the building’s architecture while offering a lush, immersive experience for residents. More than just an enhancement, these plantings helped bridge the divide between structured urban living and the natural world.

This project reflects our belief that planting design is more than an accent—it’s an extension of place, shaping how spaces are felt, experienced, and remembered.

"In early 2009, Adam Woodruff LLC took over the landscaping responsibilities at The Plaza In Clayton. Both Management and Residents are extremely pleased with the outcome. Mr. Woodruff and his team of professionals are very detailed and responsive. His seasonal displays are creative and distinct, a virtual botanical garden."  Dustin Coleman, Community Manager
